Giotto di Bondone

(c. 1266–1337)
Giotto worked in Florence where he was appointed head of the Florence Cathedral School in 1334. A contemporary of dante, his portrayal of biblical scenes was totally different from that of the existing majestic Byzantine tradition and extremely influential. Although his saints wear halos, they are portrayed as real people, living on solid ground. His best-known works are his frescos in the Arena Chapel, Padua. Although by later standards his perspective was technically faulty, his placing of figures on the ground and in the landscape emphasises their human interaction.
